vnews

This year’s VMworld 2014 in the U.S. promised to be a doozy and it certainly succeeded!

Although neither Steve nor I could make it in person this year that didn’t stop us being glued to our Twitter feeds and Blogger-verse to glean every last morsel of information we could get our paws on to bring you this cracking new Podcast Roundup of what we thought were the important take homes from this year’s conference.

As promised here are the show notes so simply download the podcast from here or subscribe to us on iTunes by searching for vNews.

Simplivity Converged Infrastructure Adds Cisco UCS

http://www.simplivity.com/products/omnistack-cisco-ucs/

OmniStack Integrated Solution with Cisco UCS empowers you with the following:

  1. You can set up global VM-centric policies, manage workloads in the federation and automate common tasks. This allows you to be more agile and efficient, and reduces your operational costs. OmniStack’s VM-centric approach shifts policies from underlying hardware components to workloads, enabling greater mobility and agility.
  2. You gain integrated data protection with VM-level backup policies and WAN-optimized replication to a second site or the cloud for disaster recovery and cost effective, off-site backup.
  3. OmniStack data virtualization platform manages data segments in 4K to 8K chunks and deduplicates redundant segments before data hits disk, eliminating unnecessary read/write IO. Deduplicating, compressing and optimizing data in real time saves IOPS and capacity on primary storage and throughout the workload’s lifecycle

Use Cases:

  1. ROBO/Multi-Site Central Management Projects – SimpliVity and Cisco enable unified Remote Office/Branch Office Management projects by providing data mobility services and the ability to manage remote OmniStack-powered hyperconverged infrastructure from one location and interface
  2. All-in-one IT modernization projects for broad sets of applications including mission-critical applications
  3. Backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity projects
  4. Data migration, as well as merger and acquisition projects
  5. Development, test, and QA projects
  6. Technology refresh projects

 VMware supporting OpenStack

In the same way RedHat supports Open Source Linux VMware is to support OpenStack on vSphere. VMware will provide packaging of OpenStack

 vSphere 6.0 in Beta

….. but should be available next year

  • vmtn/vspherebeta – Still under NDA but open Beta
  • Content Library which replicates files such as templates and ISOs between vCenters
  • vMotion cross vSwitch / Portgroup
  • vMotion between vCenters provided they are network accessible. Different everything “vTeleport”
  • Long Distance vMotion upto 100ms downtime. SRM still manages DR but this would allow small numbers of VMs dependent on bandwidth
  • Web Client optimized especially response times. Now more closely reflects the .NET client.
  • .NET client will be updated to manage virtual hardware version 10
  • FT now supports upto 4vCPUs. Instantaneous failover now possible.
  • vVols extended to use external drive pools. All vendors supporting EMC; NetApp; IBM; HP; Dell; etc

Linux virtual machine on ESXi 5.0 having network no connection

The had no network connectivity even though the configuration on the virtual networking looked fine.

The problem was that the mac address of the virtual hardware nic and the mac address of CentOS’ nic were not the same.  They need to be for it to work.

See screen shots below:

where to download the Dell vSphere ESXi 5 ISO from

Just a quick post to bookmark where to download the Dell branded vSphere ESXi ISO with all the Dell drivers pre-installed.  This link is just for the rather common R710:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/555/Product/poweredge-r710#

Once you are at the above page click on the “Operating Systems” Drop down and select ESXi5.0 from the list.  Now scroll down and expand “Enterprise Solutions” and there you will see the links to download.

Windows 8 on VMware vSphere ESXi 5 with vSphere 5.0 Update 1

There is already a patch to enable Windows 8 to be installed as a guest on ESXi 5.0 (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2006859)  but now VMware have released a complete update for the vSphere family.  It’s simply vSphere 5.0 Update 1.

The things that excite me the most are that ESXi officially support Windows 8 and MAC OS X  “Lion” 10.7.3.

I look forward to cranking up the VMware View environment and bringing the guest operating systems right up to date.

Here’s is the official information:

This release provides the following improvements:

VMware ESXi

  • Support for new Intel and AMD processors
  • Adding support for Native Storage Drivers for Intel C600 series chipset and upgrades LSI MegaRAID SAS driver to version 5.34
  • Now supporting Mac OS X Server Lion 10.7.2 and 10.7.3 guest operating systems
  • Numerous bug and security fixes

VMware vCenter

  • Guest Operating System Customization Improvements: vCenter Server adds support for customization of the following guest operating systems
    • Windows 8
    • Ubuntu 11.10
    • Ubuntu 11.04
    • Ubuntu 10.10
    • Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP2
  • Numerous bug and security fixes

VMware vCenter Update Manager

  • Security Update: In Update Manager 5.0 Update 1, the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 database, the Oracle (Sun) JRE package and the certificate that is provided with Update Manager installation package are updated to address security related issues.
  • Improved Product Usability: Update Manager 5.0 Update 1 provides upgrade release version information, improved maintenance mode impact differentiation, and a warning message that states a snapshot of fault tolerant virtual machines cannot be created during remediation.
  • Improved Product Robustness: In Update Manager 5.0 Update 1, virtual appliance updates and the Update Manager server failure are handled in an improved manner.

HP VMware ESXi 5.0 install media/ISO download location
